Message from Academic Affairs
Whether you are a prospective, transfer or current student, or a parent, Academic Affairs is likely to be your first contact with the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS). It is our function to support students and faculty to sustain academic quality and to assist with completion of processes, forms, and curriculum in as timely and well-executed manner as possible. It is our intent to recruit students who have a good fit and strong interest in our college programs and to support them to move through their curriculum to their full potential and in a timely manner. We also intend to see our graduates become successful alumni and to contribute to workforce development (i.e., from recruitment to curriculum to career are a continuum). In regard to faculty, our office also supports college interdisciplinary teaching, the CHHS Teaching Award, courses and curriculum, catalog, advising, academic integrity, and other collegiate initiatives.
In regard to students, Academic Affairs is involved in:
Service-learning
Service-learning is a community-based form of experiential education that strengthens learning while helping to meet unmet needs in the community. Students, community organizations and faculty members all benefit from service-learning in unique and substantial ways through collaboration.
Recruitment
College-wide recruitment efforts happen here. So, if youare a prospective student (new, transfer orreturning) looking for information about how to get started please contact our office. In addition, if you are associated with a high school or community college and would like information, including someone to come to your campus and provide information about CHHS and our programs please contact us. We will be happy to provide information electronically, by mail, or in person.
Advisement
Academic advisement consists of not only class selection, but also major exploration and career planning. It is essential for the student working toward a timely graduation. Again as a prospective student, an incoming freshmen, transfer student, returning student or continuing University of Nevada student, advisement efforts are coordinated through Academic Affairs. If you have any questions about university policies and procedure, please contact either your academic advisor or Academic Affairs personnel.
Retention
Academic Affairs faculty and staff work with professionals on campus to institute and implement policies and procedures that are targeted toward providing students a fulfilling and trouble-free campus experience. This broad range of topics includes the Grade Replacement policy and publication of 4-year graduation plans among many other items. If you, as a student, are experiencing challenges, please contact us so that we may work with you to get you back on track with your progress toward graduation.
Scholarships
There are many university-wide scholarships available to all students, but there are also college-specific and major-specific scholarships available as well. Academic Affairs coordinates the University Foundation, Financial Aid and Scholarships and the various majors to complete the process.
Student Ambassadors
This year we will launch a new program called Student Ambassadors. These current students will be representative of each of our programs and will assist with recruitment events, advising events and represent the college at other various functions. In addition, they will comprise our Student Advisory Board which will be a sounding board for college administration in regard to student affairs.
Please contact Academic Affairs by calling (775) 784-6977.
