Spotlight on Faculty Awards
Eric Albers, Ph.D., was awarded the most distinguished honor by the Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers at its annual meeting earlier this month. He was recognized as the Social Worker of the Year. (NevadaNews, 10/07)
Deborah Loesch-Griffin, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Evaluation, received the 2007 Global Citizen Award from the Northern Nevada International Center as a result of her work with Global Voice. (NevadaNews, 03/07)
Bill Evans, Ph.D., Professor in Human Development and Family Studies and State Youth Development Specialist, received the prestigious Annie E. Casey Award in 2006 at the Jefferson Auditorium, USDA in Washington D.C. (NevadaNews, 09/06)
Barbara Thornton, Ph.D., professor in the School of Public Health, is the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award, given to a faculty member who made outstanding contributions in his or her field. During her 30-year career at the University, Thornton has consistently played a leadership role. She is a bioethicist of national prominence, a beloved teacher and a principal force behind the creation of the College of Human and Community Sciences, the Nevada Center for Ethics and Health Policy and the Sage Consortium linking the center and gerontology academic programs. Eva Essa, Ph.D., Human Development and Family Studies, received the 2005 UNR Foundation Professor of the Year Award. Essa has made outstanding lifetime contributions to the University and has gained national prominence in the field of early childhood education. She is the author of three widely used early childhood education texts. She began work at the University in 1971. (NevadaNews, 05/05)
