 To Judy's family & friends,

My deepest sympathies go out to you as your mourn the loss of such a great person. Judy touched so many people and though I never worked directly with Judy during my time in the College (1998-2002) I respected her for her hard work, always standing up for what she believed in and her kindness to everyone she encountered. She will be sorely missed by all!

Words cannot adequately express how sorry I am for your loss. I knew Judy through her work with the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Over the years, we met at many conferences, and I developed a great respect for her professionally. She was a fine scientist and one of the hardest working people I ever met.
I really liked Judy and counted her among my friends. She was fun and had a zest for life not often encountered in the world of survey research or many other places for that matter. I'll really miss her.

When I took your Research Methods class a few years ago, you gave me advice about school that I carried with my through the rest of my undergraduate work and now in to graduate school. Just this afternoon, as I sat down to read my giant, green Family Theories text book, I sat my highlighter aside and thought to myself, "this is a task that is going to require more than a highlighter. I need a pen to write in the margins!" Back in Research Methods, you told us to throw away all our highlighters because they were useless and would not help us retain information. "Highlighting is too passive...you need to write ideas in the margins!" I was scared to death to bring a highlighter to you class....and even though I still use them sometimes, I always think if there is a better way I could be studying.
Your motivational speech the first day of class, about having the confidence as a student, and knowing that you have that new information somewhere in your brain, is also something I take with me to each exam and challenging situation. I can't say that I remember everything you taught us about standard deviation and validity (oops....) but along the way you provided many of your students with ways to reflect on their own learning and approach to their school work. Thank you Dr. Calder, it's so horrible to have lost such a great teacher.

My thoughts and prayers are with Judy's family. She was a great professor and even more, she was a wonderful person. I thank you, Judy, for helping me to graduate in 2006. You were such an intelligent person. There is no one like you in the world and I will never forget you. Thank you for your guidance and support.

 Jim and Kim,
There are no words to express how sorry we are for this tragedy! You have been in my prayers since the day Judy became missing. Bryan and Kim went to school together K-12 and I often would see you at school functions and around town. My heart goes out to you and I pray that your beautiful memories of all the good times you had together will get you through this very difficult time.

 Dear Judy,

It is obvious you have made a huge impact on so many people. As a fellow professor, it is plain to see that your positive influence and goodness will live on for eternity.

God bless you.

If it wasn't for Dr. Calder bringing the BRFSS to UNR's SABCAR, I would not have had a job as an undergraduate. She was an extremely hard worker and from what I have heard, a great professor as well. Though I seldom worked with her directly, I always had a great deal of respect for Dr. Calder. I am sorry that such a horrible thing could happen to such a nice person, and my heart goes out to the family.

Although I never met you, your heart and soul shine forth from all who have said so many wonderful things about you. I feel as though a distant relative has been taken from us, but I rejoice for you have found true peace, which you could never have here. Your passing reminds me of a quote from T.S. Elliot, and it goes: "The end of all our exploring will be to return to where we started, and know the place for the first time."
Journey well....

Truly Judy was an insperation to all of us who's lives she touched. Judy always had a way of motivating me by challenging me, she use to say "if you want to do it, then you will." She was my support through the death of my mother, and my insperation through every day. She will be missed greatly. She and her family will remain in my prayers...

As many other past students have commented, Dr. Calder touched our lives through her constant support and love for each of us. She supported us in everyway possible and her smile is something I will characterize her with in my memory for a long time. Thank you for everything you did for myself and the multitudes of other lives you brightened.

Judy was always kind and sweet to me when I was working at HDFS. She offered support and humor. I am saddened by her death. To the Family, we all want you to know that you are in our thoughts.
