| | I was in utter disbelief to hear what had occured to Judy. I had the opportunity to have Judy Calder as a professor, advisor and for a short while as an employer. As my professor she took the time to offer advice on my work as well as offer help when I felt discouraged with research methods. She was always busy but never to busy to answer any of my questions. As my advisor she urged that I continue doing well in school. She always had a way to put things into perspective things for you.
I can't even begin to imagine to impact this has had on her family. My heart goes out to them.

| | Judy and I were the same age when our daughters were born, and that served to connect us for the past 12 years. I had just seen Judy in the child care center selling raffle tickets, and she told me about Kim's book of poetry that was about to be published - she was always so proud of her daughter. Judy was also the faculty member who helped me with my survey research projects when I first started on my tenure track. Without her help and guidance I wouldn't have gotten many of my projects off the ground. I miss her, and will keep her and her family in my prayers. | | |

| | I first spoke to Judy almost exactly five years ago. I had applied for an IT position in her office the month before; she called mid-day on a Saturday to offer me the job—at that time she seemed to live in her office. She was very nurturing as an employer and friend. I remember that she used to stop by my desk in the evenings on her way home to make sure that I had eaten dinner and to make sure that I “took a break to clear my mind.”
Judy always had very high expectations—saying you didn’t know how to do something was never an excuse to not perform a task—which always motivated me to try harder. I cannot count the number of times she asked me to just “push a little harder.” I am extremely grateful to have met Judy, to have worked with her, and to have been able to learn while I worked. She was too good to have come to such a violent and horrific end.
Judy, I cannot imagine what your family is going through; my thoughts are with you and with them.

| | You were such an inspiration to me when I took your research course. You always provided your students with such a positive outlook on life. I can still remember your consistent advice about everyday life and to make the best of them. You are also one of the many reasons why I have decided to continue my education with going to graduate school. After an exam you read my paper to the class and told me that I should go to graduate school. Since then I knew that you believed in me and that I should believe in myself as well. Thanks for such an interesting course and for your unforgettable spirit, I will never forget you. | | |

| | Dr. Calder, I will never forget the first time I met you. I had never seen such bright hair! I also will never forget the first day of Intro to Research when you told us to only have posttive people in our lives because they will bring out the best in us. You were such a fabulous teacher. You were so supportive and I always knew that I could go to you when I was stuggling. I think I learned more from your class than any other undergrad class I had at the time. What I learned in your class is definitely helping me now in my graduate studies. I have never forgotten you and never will. You will be greatly missed. My condolences to your family. | | |

| | Dr. Calder, You have left behind a legacy for sure. You inspired many people; some of whom you were not aware. I will never forget the first day of HDFS 391 when you spent the entire first session (an hour) lecturing us about our personal life. So many valueable lessons were packed into that hour, and 2 years later, I still live by many of them. You told us to always surround ourselves with positive people and focus our energy on those relationships that make us feel good. You said not to waste valueable energy on those who bring us down or "drain" us. This advice has brought so much peace to my life. I took so much away from your class and your advice, yet when I later asked you to write a letter of recommendation for graduate school, I had to remind you of who I was. Just one example of a life you touched and never knew about. I also remember the day I realized that graduate school might be something I want to persue. You had handed out a paper with your new grading curve. It had a list of current points values and translated them to a letter grade. I was in the highest catagory and it was above the amount for an A+ so you put "apply for graduate school" in the field rather than a grade. At first it was humerous, but later that day I thought to myself that perhaps grad school was an idea I should look into. You ended up writing my letter of recommendation, and here I am. You will not be forgotton. This world can be such a cold place, but I hope you are now surrounded with nothing but positive people.
P.S. You will always be remembered as the professor who brought candy and pizza for her students on the day of the final exam.

| | Judy--you are in my thoughts and prayers. My heart is heavy with your loss and I miss you. Thank you for always being there to "mother" me--to make sure I stopped to eat lunch, asking how I was feeling and how much I slept, and just sharing your vibrant personality and humor with me everyday. Don't worry--I will stop to snack and eat my lunch and try to sleep a normal amount of hours. Since you have always been as feisty as I, your body has gone on to a better place, yet your energy and spirit will always be here with us in HDFS. We take solace in knowing you will always be here in spirit. Don't give Peter too much crap, okay? Love, Karen | | |

| | You added so much to so many lives - your family and friends, collegues and co-workers. Above and beyond your academic contributions and your work and passion for BHN, your "smile and hello" in meetings and even in the hallways will be missed. Peaceful rest to you forever. LB | | |

| | What a tragic loss for our university and the world. I will so miss Judy's presence and her popping into my office to say hello or just ask how things are going , she was such a part of day to day life in the SFB. I so admired her energy and brilliant intellect that she was so willing to share. My heart goes out to her family with sincere sympathy for your loss. Richelle | | |
