Through an approach known as “Centralized Health Data Warehouse”, NCHSI extends health statistics beyond simply using the statistics and computer as a tool for computation to a process of knowledge acquisition, storage, retrieval, linkage, analyses, and representations of health, human and other related data. The Center, housed in the School of Public Health, provides technical capacity and collaborative opportunities for researchers and health professionals in Nevada on statistical methodology, sophisticated database design, data collection, data management, data analysis, data dissemination and data presentation.
The core staff at the Center includes Dr. Wei Yang, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, who also served as the former Nevada State Chief Biostatistician and Director of State Center for Health Data and Research at Nevada State Health Division; andother fulltime or part-time researchers including Biostatisticians, Epidemiologists and Programmers, who with extensive experience in statistical analysis, data management and programming. Several of them have been certified as Professional Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Programmers.
To provide powerful data management and analysis capacity, as well as to protect confidential and human subject information, the Center is equipped with high capacity PCs and security coded door locks. In addition, the Center is equipped with a high capacity Data Server (1 TB memory size plus expendable capacity) which is singly dedicated to the Center with HIPAA compliant IT management.
The core projects and databases the Center is currently working on include Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Nevada Cancer Registry, Nevada Hospital Discharges, Nevada Death registry, Nevada Birth registry, Nevada Traumatic Brain Injury Registry, Nevada Mental Health Discharges and Nevada Early Intervention Services.
