Ambassadors to Health Careers Program
University of Nevada Reno
Orvis School of Nursing
In collaboration with the
Nevada Nurses’ Association

History

  • The Ambassadors to Health Careers Program was established in 2004 through the collaboration of the University of Nevada Reno, Orvis School of Nursing and the Nevada Nurses’ Association.

  • It is funded in part through a grant awarded to the Orvis School of Nursing from the Division of Nursing of the USDHHS.

Purpose

  • To recruit health care workers, especially nurses into the health care workforce. Note: Nevada ranks lowest in nurses per 100,000 population!
  • To recruit middle and high school students into health careers prior to their enrollment in colleges and universities.
  • A special effort is to recruit additional students who represent minority and disadvantaged groups to diversify the nursing workforce so that it more closely resembles that of the general population.

Interested students are referred to the University of Nevada, Reno Upward Bound Program. Information on the program may be found at: www.unr.edu/stsv/saos/ub/.

Who are the Ambassadors?

  • Volunteer nurses and student nurses make visits to these schools to describe health careers and nursing. They stay in touch with students who indicate an interest in health careers and nursing to mentor them as they finish high school and enter colleges and universities.
  • Nurses and student nurses interested in participating in the program as Ambassadors should contact Colette Morey at: cccbear@yahoo.com.
