Journal Club Questions and Answers:
What is the journal club?
The journal club is an informal gathering of faculty and students to discuss an article or topic of relevance to public health. The discussions will take place during lunch (to ensure informality) and will be facilitated by a faculty member or student.
How will I know what to read?
The facilitator will distribute an article electronically to all faculty and graduate students at least a week in advance of the meeting.
What if I don’t want to come?
We will miss you! But this is a benefit, not a mandatory activity. It’s also slightly social, and a great opportunity for faculty and students to get to know each other.
What if I don’t understand the article?
No worries! One of the purposes of the journal club is to discuss complex topics and articles so that we can all learn from each other. This may sound like a cliché, but it’s true: if you don’t understand something, it’s almost a certainty others don’t understand, either. Even if they do, hearing questions about a topic fosters better understanding.
What if I don’t read the article?
Come anyway! Although the greatest benefits come from thoroughly reading an article before discussing it, you are likely to learn from hearing others discuss it.
What will the topics be?
The topics will rotate throughout the semester, following the major themes of Environmental Health, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, Health Policy and Administration, Social/Behavioral Health. From time to time, a “special topic” will be chosen, and participants will be invited to bring articles from their own areas of expertise or interest. The latter will be similar to the panel discussion of the Hepatitis C outbreak held early in the fall semester.
Who will pick the articles?
The facilitator will choose the article. Dr. Leslie Elliott will choose the first article and facilitate the first discussion just to get the club going. However, over the course of the semester, there will be an ongoing opportunity to sign up to be a facilitator (and choose the article!). Dr. Elliott will be the default facilitator if no one signs up.
